What I Saw and How I Pretended It Was All True

I think most authors--above all else--look forward to seeing their book on the shelf at a bookstore. That is the ultimate proof of your dream coming to fruition!

But sometimes we cheat.:)

When I got my ARCs, Harper also sent me jacket proofs. This is basically the cover without a book. :D It comes in a big long strip of shiny paper that most authors (me included) immediately fold around another book about the same size and then pretend it really is their hardback book.

Well, I've never been one to be satisfied doing what everyone else is doing, so I had to take it one step farther.

I went to Barnes and Noble and put my fake book (it was actually Claudia Gray's Evernight inside, in case you were wondering) on the shelf. Look how pretty it was.:)

Awww, isn't that awesome. This is Wings on the new release shelf. . . and yes, yes, it IS right next to Hunger Games.;)

And this may sound odd, but I honestly had never, until that moment, thought about where it would go alphabetically. So I ran my fingers down the P's and . . . yes, there it is, right beside Christopher Paolini. *headthunk*

Nonetheless, I think it looks pretty there too.:)

And that brings us to the other part of the title of this blog--the giveaway portion!! This year's National Book Award winner is a book called What I Did and How I Lied I can't really say much about this book as I picked up my copy at the same time as I picked up the giveaway one, but the NBA people tend to pick good one and the cover is totally swoon-worthy. Check it out!

Here's the description courtesy of Powell's.:) "When Evie's father returned home from World War II, the family fell back into its normal life pretty quickly. But Joe Spooner brought more back with him than just good war stories. When movie-star handsome Peter Coleridge, a young ex-GI who served in Joe's company in postwar Austria, shows up, Evie is suddenly caught in a complicated web of lies that she only slowly recognizes. She finds herself falling for Peter, ignoring the secrets that surround him . . . until a tragedy occurs that shatters her family and breaks her life in two.

As she begins to realize that almost everything she believed to be a truth was really a lie, Evie must get to the heart of the deceptions and choose between her loyalty to her parents and her feelings for the man she loves. Someone will have to be betrayed. The question is . . . who?"

So the process of winning it is pretty simple. Post a fun holiday memory! You have till Midnight (MST) on Christmas Eve to enter!

I may or may not be blogging much during the winter break. I will be having TONS of family over right after Christmas and have a bunch of things on my plate, but even if you don't hear from me till then, I will be back with a fury in the New Year!! (Probably with a nostalgia-filled quote about 2009 being THE year.;))

So to all of you, have a good end of the year and holiday season!!!

Ciao!

Ooooh, I love how it looks in the bookstore! Can't wait until it's in my Barnes and Noble.

Hmmm... fun holiday memory? When I was a kid, my parents had this little stuffed Santa Claus they'd hide somewhere in the house every morning up until Christmas Day. My brothers and sister and I would fall all over each other, trying to find the Santa before anyone else. I think there were treats involved.

Merry Christmas!

I am sooo counting down till I see that in the stores too! I am still so amazed at all you have done!

Ok, holiday tradition... All I can say is... donuts! Do you remember all the donuts my parents used to make? I dont do nearly as good at them so I do sugar cookies, but my mom still makes tons and tons of donuts every december!

lol, okay I admit it, I kind of did that too (but just with the ARC). And I took pictures of it with my cellphone.

Just wait till it's on the shelf for real! And it will be happening sooner than you think!

The cover is so beautiful, and I love that you took it to Barnes & Noble. What a great moment--thanks for sharing!

My holiday memory is from a few years ago, when I was home for Christmas from college. I have a poem about it, so I'm going to post that.

In Which I Discover the New Moon Chinese Buffet and Carry-out Corners the Fine Dining Market on Christmas Day

The night before Christmas, I break
the oven light, somehow offing half
the power in my parents' house, blowing

a fuse, leaving our pies to melt, our ham
to thaw. My father, no magician, cannot
restore the power, so we spend Christmas

eating General Tsao’s Chicken out of take-
out boxes as Wendy, my brother's girlfriend,
whom we have just met, plays "God Rest Ye

Merry, Gentlemen" on mandolin. My cousins
abandon identical remote control Batmobiles
to swarm around her: Colin, Brandon, Breanna

waiting to pluck the strings, make the instrument
sing as she answers their insistent questions
(May I touch it? Will you teach me?) smoothly,

her hands still flying, madly plucking, as my
brother beside me is beaming
for the first time in years.

Christmas, the Pikes house, Richard wore a Pink Santa hat from Victoria's secret. Still have the picture. The memory is still warm.

A holiday memory is when I got my telescope when I was 12.

I LOVE that you took the jacket to the bookstore and took pictures! That's so cool! I bet you can't wait to see the real thing on the shelf in a few months.

Hmmm ... fun holiday memory? It's always been our tradition to drive around and look at lights on Christmas Eve, then come home and open PJs to wear to bed. We never opened any other presents that day, so it is always feels really wierd to me that we do that with my ILs. We're trying to start a new memory with our kids and go sledding on Christmas day after all the presents are done and the big breakfast is over.

That book looks really interesting ... I love WWII historical fiction stories.

Why [headthunk] for being next to a popular author?

Imagine reader -

"Hmmm- what's this Wings book next to my dragon-themed book? Are there any dragons? First page says - hmm, interesting..."

That's so cool to see your book on the shelf!

My favorite memory: going to midnight mass with my family in the Philippines. And I thought it was COLD then!

Merry Christmas, Aprilynne!

Man, this is so exciting! I can't wait to see it on the shelf myself! Your book looks so great!

One of my favorite Holiday memories is from about 3 years ago. I was pregnant with Landis and we decided to take a bicycling tour of the Christmas lights. Yup, even in the cold December night we hoofed it for about 10 miles, my belly large enough to touch the seat as I leaned over the handle bars. Teilee bundled in the bike trailer, would squeal at every light display we passed. We now try to do that every year.

:) It looks really great in the bookstore. Can't wait to see it there!

One of my favorite memories was when I went over to a friend's house for a christmas party, with another friend who gave me a ride. And then, we rang the doorbell and no one answered.

So my friend and I randomly started singing christmas carols at her door until we decided that (about an hour later) that they had to be at the house. And so we rang the doorbell again, and it turned out they were standing there and watching us the entire time!

Just wanted to say thanks for stopping by my blog. You did make my 2008 survey and you'll probably make a few more since I've seriously fallen in love with Wings!

PS - I never actually thought of how mock-ups look on the actual bookshelves of stores. It looks fabulous!

I like the idea of wrapping a cover around another book on a store shelf.

You could take it a step farther and take pix of your "book" in wondrous places, or pose your friends with it.

Congrats and hang in there until your release date finally arrives.
